Here’s to The Wilders…

This morning we received a note from Ike Sheldon, lead singer for Free Dirt Records recording artist The Wilders.  You can read it here, but to sum up, The Wilders are going on hiatus.  We’re not really sure what that means… hell, they don’t even know what that means.  It could mean they never play again.  It could mean they’re back in 2013 in full force, bigger and better than ever.   But this morning we’re not really speculating about anything… we’re just a little sad about the possibility of never seeing them play again, and a little reflective about how tremendous of a band The Wilders are, how much joy they’ve brought to so many people over the last 15 years through their recorded works and their legendary live shows, and how lucky the folks at Free Dirt feel to have had a chance to work with Betse Ellis, Ike Sheldon, Nate Gawron, and Phil Wade for the last few of them.  Their unbelievable talents and profound integrity astound us.   They’ve welcomed us into their lives and hearts, and we truly consider them family.   Just how grateful is Free Dirt Records for The Wilders?  Well, we think we can safely say that Trade Root Music Group and Free Dirt Records probably wouldn’t be around still if it weren’t for them.  So, since there’s no telling what will happen, let’s just think of the good times they’ve brought, and the hope that their time away may bring about bigger and better things for them (whether as normal, everyday productive non-musician members of society, individual artists, or once again as a band).  And of course, whatever musical endeavours that might happen with the gang as individuals or as a group, you know they’ll always have a home at Free Dirt Records.  Here’s to The Wilders!  Group hug time!

Say Hello to the Two Man Gentlemen Band!

The Two Man Gentlemen BandFree Dirt Records is so incredibly happy to bring into the fold the hot jazz, rhythm & blues, tin-pan alley, and western swing sounds of the Two Man Gentlemen Band! I mean, we can’t be any happier to be working with them. They’re such great guys. And wow, are they attractive or what! But notice that only one of them is wearing a mustache at any given time… that’s a bit odd. Ok anyway, so their first 7″ vinyl single (but not ours) is called “Prescription Drugs/Tikka Masala”. It’s a limited edition release, and individually numbered. Pick it up from them directly on their fall 2011 tour (click here for their full tour schedule), or get a a copy directly from the Trade Root Music Group website!

Welcome to the “Middle of Everywhere”- Pokey LaFarge and the South City Three new album out now!

Best news ever!  The new album from Pokey LaFarge and the South City Three, Middle of Everywhere, is now available! Channeling American roots, country blues, and jazz traditions of the early 20th century, their newest recording is surely a most inspired 21st -century creation. Middle of Everywhere represents the latest addition to a growing eminence in contemporary American roots music, and LaFarge is definitely paving the way. He and his crew don’t just pay homage to their artistic forbears here – they commandeer their legacies and create something new— and with Midwestern country blues mashed with Western swing, sweet harmony vocals, and hints of New Orleans style horns and lap steel throughout, the title Middle of Everywhere is particularly fitting. LaFarge’s honest, approachable songwriting chops shine through on such tracks as “Head to Toe,” and “Ain’t the Same,” with The South City Three all the while providing an impeccable up-tempo driving rhythm. LaFarge has always had the grace, charm, and flair of the musicians of long ago, but Middle of Everywhere shows just how much of a musical force he is, and how much command he possesses as he steps out with accordant confidence.

Pokey LaFarge and the South City Three at the Newport Folk Festival

Free Dirt Records recording artist Pokey LaFarge & The South City Three wowed a large and enthusiastic crowd on August 1, 2010 at the Newport Folk Festival. A number of music critics in the audience wasted no time before sharing their excitement about the performance. Here’s a sampling:

“[Pokey LaFarge] studies the past and makes it his own… his voice is strong and warm and the show he and the South City Three put on at Newport was simply charming. The sentiment in ["Feels So Good"] pretty well sums up what I love about this band.” – Bob Boilen, NPR

“Best Discovery: This 26-year-old St. Louis troubadour is all about reviving the roaring 1920s — and onstage Sunday he did a fine job. Wearing a high-waisted gray suit with perfectly slick-backed hair, LaFarge strummed an acoustic guitar and lead his three-piece band on old-school jazz and blues standards like the snappy and fun “Right Key, Wrong Key Hole,” plus ragtime, swing, and Delta-meets-Appalachia tracks off their aptly-titled new release, ‘Riverboat Soul’. ‘This is a folk festival and we are playing American music, people,’ he announced from the stage. Amen.” – William Goodman, Spin Magazine

“Pokey LaFarge and the South City Three channeled a sepia-toned era with their irresistible take on Western swing and old-time jazz.” – James Reed, Boston Globe

“St. Louis-based La Farge’s band was one of the festival’s coolest relatively unknown acts. Nattily dressed in vintage attire (with one looking like Peewee Herman and another like revivalist Leon Redbone did 35 years ago), they served up 1920s-’40s swing and country blues styles (with many songs from La Farge’s pen).” – Bruce Sylvester, Goldmine

You can listen to a complete recording of the show at NPR.org!

Howard Zinn: War and Civil Disobedience

War and Civil DisobedienceWhat are citizens to do when confronted by unjust laws and when their government embroils them in unjust wars? Delivered in the context of the current U.S. war in Iraq, this recording is a scintillating lecture and discussion by the legendary teacher, historian, playwright and activist. Howard Zinn offers from the lens of history, models, ideas and inspiration for how and why we might go about challenging and changing the structures of power, the necessity of civil disobedience for a functioning democracy, and its centrality to social movements.

“Whenever important things had to be done and injustices had to be rectified, that initiative did not come from Washington; it came from social movements. It was the anti-slavery movement more than Abraham Lincoln that was responsible for the end of slavery. It was the labor movement more than FDR that was responsible for the minimum wage and all that. So we need a new social movement. We need more protests, we need more acts, we need more citizen involvement, yes, and we need civil disobedience.”
–Howard Zinn, excerpt from “War and Civil Disobedience”
