Beolach
Beolach
(BM-CD-001)

Beolach (a Galeic word meaning "lively youth") is one of Cape Breton's most exciting young bands. Featuring master musicians Wendy MacIsaac (fiddle, banjo, piano), Mairi Rankin (fiddle), Patrick Gillis (guitar), Ryan MacNeil (pipes, whistles), and Mac Morin (piano, accordion), the group performs an energetic mix of Cape Breton, Scottish, and Irish tunes and thrills audiences with energetic performances, witty presentation, and versatile stepdancing. This two-time East Coast Music Awards (ECMA) nominated group recorded their self titled debut album in the summer of 2001 at Lakewind Sound in Point Aconi Cape Breton. The recording features original compositions as well as the group's uniquely dynamic arrangements of their favorite traditional tunes. Although Be˜lach musicians present these tunes in a contemporary style, they maintain a respect and understanding of the Cape Breton style that is sure to please fans of Celtic and world music.

Chumbawamba
The Boy Bands Have Won
(ROOT-CD-0006)

Chumbawamba is back, armed with acoustic guitars, accordion and trumpet, five-part harmonies, a bucketful of attitude and a new 25-track album called The Boy Bands Have Won. It actually has a much longer title than that (See cover for full title), but let's call it by its pseudonym. The new album is a collection of such ideas; some are just passing thoughts, others are fully-formed songs. It's gentle and warm in tone, but caustic in intent. It plays with culture, with the idea of recycling our own culture. We all have this vast history of "stuff", musical and historical and in art and sport and politics and a million other things. And it's all there for the taking. Featuring guests the OysterBand, Roy Bailey, Robb Johnson, Barry Coope and Jim Boyes... and a hundred others, give or take a few.
"We should be grateful for the Chumbas. Moving on from that anarchic post-punk phase and the bestselling single "Tubthumping", they have eased across to the folk scene and reinvented themselves yet again - this time as a classy, low-key harmony band writing inventive, intelligent songs." -- Robin Denselow, The Guardian (UK)

Chumbawamba
Get On With It: Live
(ROOT-CD-0005)

Anyone who's been to a Chumbawamba show recently will testify to the importance and relevance of releasing this live album. The band engages and plays off the audience by approaching radical music from a warm and communal standpoint. Aware that so many bands just get on stage and play, refusing to interact with the audience, Chumbawamba are determined to make gigs inclusive, not alienating. People at gigs asked if they could buy the album that sounded most like tonight, and the band felt that none of their albums caught the show as it stands today. Get On With It: Live is pop, folk, a capella, politics, humor, four-part harmony and five-part anger. It's sing-alongs and hymns, throwaways and big choruses, old favorites, covers and unreleased songs, including two tracks only available on this North American release!
...wit, compassion and great harmonies - staying avowedly political. The iron (left) fist in a sweet velvet glove. - Chris Nickson, Globalvilliageidiot.com

Chumbawamba
English Rebel Songs 1381-1984
(ROOT-CD-0004)

English Rebel Songs 1381-1984 is Chumbawamba's homage to the men and women who never had obituaries in the broadsheets; those who never received titles or appeared in as an entry in "Who's Who." This is an album that conjures up the tragedies and triumphs of the people who shaped England: its citizens. This album was originally recorded in 1988 when Chumbawamba was determined to stir up a rout in the tiny anarcho-punk community by swapping guitars and drums for a capella singing. The songs were discovered in songbooks, in folk clubs and on cassette tapes, chopped and changed and bludgeoned into shape with utmost respect for the original tunes. Fierce, sweet and powerful, English Rebel Songs 1381-1984 contains ballads not included on the original album. It's guaranteed to sway the listener, break hearts and encourage hope...just as those who inspired the songs by changing history.

Chumbawamba
A Singsong & a Scrap
(ROOT-CD-0003)

This new, mainly acoustic Chumbawamba album is, for the first time, a collection of songs, pure and simple. Songs with a radical voice, songs with those same old same old Chumbawamba fourpart harmonies and catchy choruses, but songs nevertheless songs without drumloops or samples, without backwards cymbals or synth sequencers. It won't fit neatly into any categories, since it stands with its eight legs in different camps. Traditional English music, 'unplugged' pop, choral secular music, jangly acoustic singalongs... oh! Just sling a few barely related words together to create categories that sound vaguely familiar.

Derrick Jensen
Now This War Has Two Sides
(ROOT-CD-0007)

Author, teacher, activist, and leading voice of uncompromising dissent, Derrick Jensen regularly stirs auditoriums across the country with revolutionary spirit. Whether exposing the ravages of industrial civilization, relaying humorous anecdotes from his life, or bravely presenting a few of the endless forms that resistance can (and must) take, Jensen leaves his audience both engaged and enraged.
"Derrick Jensen is a rare and original voice of sanity in a chaotic world. He has wisdom and wit, grace and style, and is a wonderful guide to a good life beautifully lived."

Mary Jane Lamond
Storas
(02-06363)

Mary Jane's latest recording Storas (Gaelic meaning "a treasure"), is a beautiful interpretation of some of the Scottish Gaelic songs that have become part of Nova Scotia's Gaelic tradition. Her use of modern instrumentation and arrangements provides a respectful and beautful framework for these Gaelic treasures, but it is Mary Jane's spellbinding vocal performance and heartfelt delivery that makes these selections truly come alive for the listener.

John Lilly
Last Chance to Dance
(JL-2003)

As a past winner of the national Ghost Writers In the Sky songwriting contest (sponsored by Chicago-based HankFest) and as the current editor of Goldenseal (A magazine about cultural and historical traditions in West Virginia) John Lilly is steeped in country and Appalachian music tradition. It most certainly carries through to Lilly's musicianship. His creative, original songs recall the sounds of earlier generations, while his innovative treatment of early country and traditional music is timeless. Last Chance to Dance is exactly this; a heart stopping collection of original songs, old-time ballads and early country tunes that is sure to conjure up visions of barn dances, old-time jukeboxes, and Jimmie Rodgers.
"If Hank Williams had a sunny disposition, he'd be John Lilly" -- Independent Weekly (Durham, NC)
"Lilly's the real thing -- he's got the 'feel,' the intensity, the soul, and the sweetness in his music." -- Bluegrass Unlimited

Casey Neill
Memory Against Forgetting
(AKA 041 CD)

"This is a collection of songs steeped in memories I've lived, lived by others, never lived at all. They span 10 years of my recording career and fluctuate in style, form, and instrumentation. I was different people, and I am all too much the fucking same. The songs are culled from live shows, lost tracks, compilations, and an out of print CD called Riffraff. It's only the ones I can still live with. "People call songs like this topical (is it anesthesia? Am I at the dentist? Don't all songs have a topic?). The many country songs I write about losing the girl aren't here, anyway. Since this is mostly archival material, these aren't timely responses to current events. They are simply stories that hopefully speak to something bigger. And some piss and vinegar too."--Casey Neill, from the liner notes. Contemporary, political folk (not to mention Celtic) at its finest.

Nethers
What the Wind Will Never Tell
(IZN-CD-003)

This sophomore full-length effort from Nethers is the impeccable result of what happens when a band travels over 3,000 miles to record in the garage of an esteemed producer who they've never met before. Together with Thom Monahan (Pernice Brothers, Gary Louris, Lilys, Lavender Diamond), the band created What the Wind Would Never Tell, a seamless collection of incandescent pop and late-night mood pieces, Sunday morning hangover music and dark, brooding funeral hymns, galloping psych-summer sing-a-longs, and heart-aching waltzes... All sung with stunning warmth, depth, and haunting beauty by vocalist Nikki West. It comes on the heels of their critically claimed debut, In Field We Will Lie, a 3-week stint with Dungen, and shows with the Decemberists, the Walkmen, the National, and Josh Ritter.
"Startlingly beautiful." -- Washington Post
"Pure Genius." -- The Village Voice

Shared Musics and Minority Identities: Papers from the Third Meeting of the "Music and Minorities"
(ISBN 9536020327)

In the last decade the 'Music and Minorities" Study Group of the International Council for Traditional Music has been a driving force in the ethnomusicological study of minorities and their music. This volume, titled Shared Musics and Minority Identities, contains papers from the Study Group's third meeting, which was held in 2004 in Roc, Croatia. The three mutually interlocking themes of the meeting were: 1. Multiple identities and identity management in the music of minorities, 2. Emics and etics in relation to the music of minorities, 3. Marginality, empowerment and applied ethnomusicology. But, the sharing of identities inside or beyond a supposedly firm ethnic group, the sharing of musics between different ethnic groups, and the issue of sharing between researchers (and other experts) and their subjects have appeared as the three conjunctive aspects of the papers in this volume, and the basis for their sequence. This volume directly follows the collections of papers from two previous meetings of the Study Group "Music and Minorities".
